The longer letter from Rail Nation
Written on leaving, after the full visit. Card posted 14 October 2026.
Rail Nation isn't a city-builder and it isn't a war game. You run a railway company: buy engines, lay track between cities, haul what each city needs and watch it grow. A server is a round of roughly three months across six eras of locomotives, and at the end a city wins, the round closes, and everyone starts again somewhere new.
The decisions are real. Which goods to move, which cities to connect, when to switch engine generations, whether the next purchase is a faster train or more wagons: they compound over the round, and your association's choice of home city shapes the whole three months. The interface is dense and takes a few days to stop fighting you.
The endgame divides people. The last era wants daily attention, and if your association is competitive the final week is intense. Some of us loved having a deadline. Others wanted to go back to Elvenar. Premium bonuses also matter more late in the round than early, which is where the welcome mark lands.
Go if
- You like a season with a scoreboard and a team
- Planning routes sounds better than planning sieges
- You'd rather restart fresh than face year-old veterans
Stay home if
- Losing everything every three months sounds exhausting
- You can't commit to daily log-ins near the end
